Northern Trick (USA) (foaled 1981) was a Thoroughbred racehorse (ch.), by Northern Dancer (CAN) out of Trick Chick (USA) [1], bred by Warner L. Jones at Hermitage Farm, Kentucky, USA,[2]. Owned by Stavros Niarchos, trained by François Boutin and regularly ridden by Cash Asmussen, she was a champion three-year-old in France in 1984 and regarded as one of the best winners of the Prix de Diane[3].

Unraced at two, from six starts as a three-year-old in 1984 she won four races, including the Prix de Diane (2100 m) at Chantilly and the Prix Vermeille (2400 m) and the Prix de la Nonette (2000 m) at Longchamp. In her other two races she finished second to Sagace in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp and second to Grise Mine in the Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp[1]. Her total career earnings were FF 2,910,000[4].

She was described as tall, narrow, and sparely made, typical of her broodmare sire Prince John's offspring rather than those of her sire Northern Dancer[5].

Through her dam Trick Chick, Northern Trick was a grand-daughter of the notable broodmare Fast Line[5]. Through her daughter Lingerie (GB), she herself is grand-dam of Shiva (JPN), champion older mare in Europe in 1999 and 2000, winner of the Tattersalls Gold Cup (Gr.1), the Brigadier Gerard Stakes(Gr.3) and the Earl of Sefton Stakes (Gr.3), second in the Champion Stakes(Gr.1) and third in the Coral Eclipse Stakes (Gr.1)[6], and Light Shift, winner of the 2007 Epsom Oaks (Gr.1), second in the Irish Oaks (Gr.1) and third in the Nassau Stakes (Gr.1)[7].

Northern Trick was half-sister to On The Sly (USA) (1973), winner of 14 races including the Lou Smith Memorial Handcap, Rosemont Stakes, Jockey Club Gold Cup (Group 1), Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (Group 2).-G2, Whirlaway Handicap, Donald P. Ross Handicap (Group 2) and Grey Lag Handicap (Group 2)[8].
